| | Reconnaisance and Traceback | Reconnaissance and traceback is used to identify the source of an attack, infection, or even spam. For example, if you find someone sending spam out pretending to be your company offering some false or offensive products, you can perform a forensic examination on the contents of the email header.
In the Recon/Traceback course, attendees perform reconnaissance on a series of email headers, identify the owner of a domain (and relationships to other domain names), determine available services on a host, identify the host’s location, find out the host’s ISP and more!
| | What You Will Learn | A one-day course on tracing back to a host using various types of evidence and traceback methods.
Using NetScanTools Pro, the same tool that the US Department of Justice uses for their investigations, students learn to use the Internet to perform automated and manual research on a target system.
Course tasks include:- Identify the proper tool required to perform reconnaissance and traceback from inside and outside network firewalls
- Identify the most appropriate type of reconnaissance to perform on a target
- Perform safe mode research on a potentially dangerous suspect system
- Configure and perform customized intermediate and advanced reconnaissance
- Learn how to use passive and active OS fingerprinting to identify a target operating system and identify the signature of active OS fingerprinting
- Locate a target using a combination of ICMP, UDP and TCP tests
- Determine a target's web server type and safely access potentially malicious web pages
- Translate obscured URLs as seen in phishing schemes
- Set up a system to trap and log scans to specific ports
- Learn to check for open SMTP servers and blacklisted servers
- Learn to translate spam addresses like 345678
- Use batch DNS transfers to learn everything about a set of host names
- Use name resolution and Whois resolution to determine IP address ownership
- Use online research tools to investigate a target person, hostname or URL
- Identify the MX (mail exchange) server for a domain
- Attempt to find all the computers in a domain
- Validate email addresses
- Learn how to protect yourself and your company from unwanted reconnaissance and/or traceback methods
